Having a girl is all I ever imagined (and more) for baby fashion.

Carter's is adorable, affordable, but every mommy already knows that. H has many many comfy carter's clothes.

Similar to my clothing post when we had Aiden; I can't say enough about GAP clothing.

Their girl's collections are  beautiful.  Online, I rarely purchase from them; but, our local outlet has a multitude of options for low prices. They have fun, beautiful baby clothes, a step up from Carter's.

Favorites (online, I realize, but I love GAP's fabric choices & playful sophistication):

We've had great luck with bottoms from Old Navy & Target (GAP, too, since Hadley is a bit less skinny than A.)

Old Navy skinny jeans are adorable. Order a size up, even if your lo is skinny.

The tea collection has the best clothes for babies and toddlers, hands down.
They are also the most expensive. But I can't say enough for the quality, durability and style.
My sister-in-law has handed down Tea items for H, and we honestly use them the most often, and they have survived tons of washes!
Inspiration:

If you check out the tea collection website, or the GAP & Old Navy websites, you will find tons of options.  I am obsessed with floral prints, but I promise there are MANY more fabulous items.

Now that Hadley is 1 yr old, Tea has become our desired brand.  If you are in Traverse City, MI, visit

Sweet Pea

Sweet Pea is the absolute best baby/kid's store in Traverse City.  Their tea collection is extensive.  They sell   diaper bags (Petunia Pickle Bottom <3), accessories, Melissa and Doug toys, Mclaren strollers, and so many options for diapering, feeding, carrying, etc.

More to come!

Sarah

Stroller for Two

Strollers for *2*

Last christmas we received the Joovy Caboose Ultralight Tandem Stand-On

I researched double strollers endlessly. Previously convinced I wanted a Phil & Ted's double, the Joovy Caboose was the perfect choice for us.

Shorter, lighter, and easier to fold than other tandem/sit n' stand strollers - win!

In her first 3 months, Hadley's car seat fit well, rested in the front seat portion. When she was 4 months old, she sat comfortably in the front seat, reclined x1.  Either way, Aiden could stand on the back. He could also sit on the back seat, just slightly leaning forward.

If you purchase the "ultralight" version, you get the "parent pouch" included - it is a fabulous pocket system between the stroller handles, with two flexible cup holders.

It moves easily & folds in a snap (if you don't have the bottom carrier stuffed). I'm in <3 with this stroller. Buy it.

Baby basics - after baby #2!

*UPDATED* baby basics.

It's been so long....

Aiden is 3 (almost 4), and Hadley is 1! I can't believe so much time has passed. I think I totally failed my "blog", considering I have had no posts; but, I swear I still think about baby/kiddo products ALL THE TIME.  Let's see.....

In reality, the basics don't change depending on your lo's sex. No matter how many times I tried to tell myself that during my pregnancy, it just isn't as much fun. God bless my husband, Adam, for letting me do some retail celebration! With no objections, I might add....Love you, Adam.

"Favorites":

Sensitive wipes, Pamper's diapers, Desitin, Johnson & Johnson Bedtime Bath Wash & Lotion.

Burp cloths - still a necessity, as Hadley always spit up. The Carter's 6-packs of washcloths are a perfect size, and good quality. We used them for spit up when H was a baby, and now use them for baths and meal clean-up. I bought a set of pink ones, at Meijer.

Swaddlers - view my previous post for options. (Hadley absolutely hated being swaddled, total no-go.)

Again, we used Born Free bottles and our Bright Starts Bouncer.

With baby #2 I found myself using my baby wrap SO much more.  For the first month, while H was a sleepy newborn & Aiden was a maniac, loving brother, it was great to carry her on my chest while I cooked, cleaned, and took Aiden outside to play.

Graco, Step 1st, and Evenflow remain as my favorite car seat brands.  Amazon.com or Diapers.com are the best (online) options for buying!

We used Aiden's Graco Snugride as Hadley's infant car seat, then switched her to this, when she turned 1:

The Safety 1st Alpha Elite 65 car seat has been wonderful. It is rear-facing up to 40 pounds, forward-facing (reminder: only forward-facing once they are 2 yrs old), up to 65 pounds, and adjusts to a booster seat up to 100 pounds.

*Hadley reached the weight max (18 pounds) for her Graco Snugride at around 9 months. However, after a call to our community's child safety hotline, we were told that the distance of their head from the top of the seat (at least 2 inches) is much more important.  Even with her legs sticking out, the infant car seat was a safe bet for H.

Early foods & Snacks:
Gerber Yogurt Melts & puffs are still a favorite.

I am absolutely obsessed with Ella's Kitchen Organic Baby Food. For traveling, and when H was beginning "solid foods." 100% organic, 100% fruit and vegetables. Taste great (I actually tasted them, which I would NEVER do with Gerber baby food), and easy to squeeze in your lo's mouth if you're overwhelmed/short on time and utensils.

For now, that's it.  I would LOVE comments, questions - I'm obsessed with babies. Best of luck with your own!

Stroller post update

Hi all,

I was just reading through my previous posts, and I absolutely need to make an addition to my "Favorite Baby Basics" post.  I blogged about the Maclaren being my favorite brand for umbrella strollers - and they truly are AMAZING - but they are also expensive.  I don't even own one (we borrow my parents occasionally) and after searching I found a much more affordable option:

The Mia Moda Facile Umbrella Stroller is only $64.99, and has every function of a great umbrella stroller.  It is lightweight, compact (duh), with a 5-point harness and adjustable canopy.  The BEST features, making it comparable to a Maclaren, are 4 reclining seat positions and a leg rest, as well as a UV protected sun window within the canopy.  The most basic Maclaren ($130) does not even have a reclining seat or leg rest - way to go Mia Moda!  All of the Facile reviews have praised its sturdiness and ease-of-maneuverability, which are also key features.

The Facile also comes in a variety of great colors - I'm obsessed with the Aqua - such as carbon, navy, flame, tangerine, and pink. Adorable, affordable, a must-have! I will for sure be purchasing one before our next family trip.

My Favorite Recent Purchases

I must apologize, it has been ages since my last post! I intended to focus this post on my favorite summer purchases but, seeing as it is practically August, I kind of missed the boat on that one. Here are some of my absolute favorite recent purchases, summer-time and otherwise - enjoy!
**I apologize for the lack of product images, my computer has been refusing to save photos from online locations, or recognize my camera to upload personal images. I'm working on it!

Every toddler needs a musical toothbrush.
I'll admit, Aiden has always been pretty good about having his teeth brushed, but our recently-purchased musical toothbrush has become a bedtime favorite.

Brush & Learn toothbrushes By Plackers are probably a bit too bulky for your infant, but are a traditionally-sized "kid's" toothbrush.  You pick from 4 themes - A-B-C's, 1-2-3's, Barnyard Talk, and Toothbrush Talk - each in a different color toothbrush, with a super easy, toddler-friendly on-off button.  They play an adorable song that your little one is sure to love and, my favorite parts: the song helps you time how long to keep brushing, and has a wide, pedestal base for easy (clean!) stand-up storage! Highly recommend :)

*I purchased ours at Meijer, but I'm fairly certain you will be able to find them most places toothbrushes are sold.

Traditional sand toys can be so boring after days and days of beach-time play.
Melissa and Doug make my favorite summer toys, hands down.  After some searching on Amazon, I discovered their huge line of sand and beach toys, most of which I have yet to find in a store.  They are, as typical of the brand, adorable, durable and so creative!

I bought Aiden the Sunny Patch Speck Seahorse Sand Ice cream Set and it was an instant hit.  It comes with an "ice cream" bucket with seashell lid, two "ice cream" scoops, two "ice cream" cones and a "sprinkle" shaker - everything your little one needs to store their ice cream, scoop it up, and make delicious ice cream cones for their fellow beach goers!

Aiden, his cousin Brenen, and 4 other little ones couldn't get enough of it during our long day at the beach; they LOVED telling us what "flavor" we were getting, and filling the sprinkle shaker with sand to decorate their finished products.

My only complaint: I wish it came with more cones and scoops. After two weeks we managed to lose 1 cone; does anyone else seem to magically lose things at the beach? However, for only $12 for the set, I won't mind buying another next summer.

Every 2 year-old boy will love cars - here is the BEST play rug & accessories for your little driver:
Aiden loves cars.  We've slowly upgraded from the soft, mini Tonka Chuck Trucks (he does still use them), to Disney die-cast Cars, which are more detailed and for "big kids" but also a bit more expensive.  Disney Cars can be found at Toys R' Us, Meijer, Walmart, pretty much any store, but it takes some searching if you are looking for new characters to add to a growing collection. I'm a sucker for Amazon; they have a great selection, and you can find most Disney Cars with "free super-saver shipping."

I have spent an embarrassingly-long amount of time online looking for a play rug to use with Aiden's cars - I was looking for a play rug that was printed with multiple streets, parking lots, and city/town buildings.  I wanted it to be large enough for more than just Aiden to play, but not enormous.  Price was also a deal-breaker for many that I looked at.

The carpet we ended up with is: Learning Carpets My Neighborhood Play Carpet.  It is $49.99 with free super-save shipping on Amazon.com, and we love it! It is 36 X 18 inches (fairly long), has non-skid backing, and fits perfectly into a corner of our playroom. It has regular buildings printed on, houses, as well as a construction site, hospital, castle, carousel, and ice cream truck - so cute <3 Aiden loves pointing out all of the buildings, and it has just the right amount of whimsy and small-town feeling I was searching for. :)

To go with the play rug and cars, I bought the Melissa and Doug Deluxe Wooden 53-Piece Town Blocks Set.  $30 with free super-saver shipping on Amazon.com. Includes a school, fire station, grocery store, police station, town hall, and many other houses and office buildings, all with roof blocks that your little one can place on top. Also comes with trees, stop signs, and wooden cars - an ambulance, fire truck, police car and school bus, as well as a few smaller cars. I'll admit, Aiden hasn't quite embraced this set as I imagined (I pictured him building elaborate towns, with the buildings and trees placed in perfect, appropriate spots on his rug...crazy, I know), but I'm sure he will grow into it!

The cutest shoes

I have never had an obsession with my own shoes (I don't have a billion pairs, don't use them to create an outfit) but, like all things baby, I adore looking for baby-infant shoes.  Aiden has had many, so I thought I would share my favorites with you:

Baby Shoes
Robeez soft-soled shoes are by far the best shoes for your little one who is 12 months-old and younger.  Perfect for pre-walkers.  I still put Aiden in these (he is 21 months-old), while we are at home.  They are so soft and conform to your little one's feet, so they can learn to walk naturally.  Super adorable, and you can shop around a bit for different versions and prices. My favorites:

Robeez Soft Soles Puppy
Great for boys, or girls.

Robeez Soft Soles Fire Engine
Go great with any blue, green and red shades your little boy will wear.

Robeez Soft Soles Paisley Peacock
Beautiful colors, and so versatile.

Robeez Soft Soles Polka Party
Are so fun, and adorable. Enough said.

Robeez offers great footwear as your little one grows- Their soft-soled leather shoes are great for indoors and dry climate-wear, but it is practical to upgrade to their Mini Shoez as your baby gets older. Note: their First Stepz are nice as well, but you can find similar shoes (with a similar, hard sole) from other places, for a better price.

For a summer baby girl (they also come in white!) Sturdy enough for walkers.

Robeez Mini Shoez Lil Half K
Go with practically anything your little man will wear. Perfect once they are walking.

Robeez Mini Shoez Breezeez
Fabric that actually breathes, for your little one in the summer!  More like sandals than anything. Aiden had these in the boy version - and wore them everywhere - but they haven't become available yet this season.  Great beach/water shoes!**

Many other brands make adorable shoes for babies 12months +. Your little one's feet do grow quickly, but there is no harm in buying a pair of moderately-priced shoes that are good for their feet, and will last 3+ months.  My favorites are:

Adidas Samba Leather
I am obsessed with Adidas.  For boys, nothing is cuter.  A much sturdier shoe, great for outdoors and for experienced walkers.  JCrew features these with their JCrew Kids, crewcuts line....in my opinion, that means they are as fashionable as you can get for a little boy. I can just imagine Aiden running down the soccer field in these. :)

Converse for girls & Converse for boys
Adorable for girls and boys.  Come in a variety of colors, and are sold at many different stores.  Target has a version of Converse that are slightly lower in price, if you want to see them in person.

Morgan&Milo Ginger Floral
I LOVE these.

Puma Arayla Shimmer Kids
Pumas are well-made and their soles are durable, yet flexible.  Too cute.

I have bought lots of Aiden's shoes from GAP and Old Navy - decently-priced, and adorable.  Maybe not the most orthopedic, but fun and durable!

Favorite Baby Basics

Breast pump
I think you definitely get what you pay for with breast pumps. Besides, who really wants to spare money on a machine you attach to your breasts??

Hospitals have breast pumps for you to use when your little one is born, mostly to encourage breastfeeding, and for mommies whose milk doesn't come in immediately, or can't get a hang of breastfeeding right away.

Double pump, easy to figure out/ use, super portable, and comes with a shoulder bag, portable mini-cooler, and bottles. Nothing about pumping is comfortable, but this pump is supposed to mimic a baby's sucking motions, has two phases to stimulate let-down better, and has adjustable strength settings.

At around $250, this a moderately-priced pump, but will be worth your money if you pump full-time, while at work, or even occasionally.

Note: breastfeeding really wasn't for me, but I did try and breast feed/pump breast milk for about a month.  Breastfeeding is the best, obviously, but don't feel bad if you end up choosing formula.  Aiden has been a formula baby every since, and he has continued to be perfectly healthy and happy.

Bottles
I only tried one type of bottle (recommended to me), and there are SO many different brands, so I am far from an expert on this one.

However, it seems to me that you get what you pay for and, seeing as they aren't disposable, you can spend a bit more on 4 or 5 good ones without breaking the bank.

There are tons of credentials, BPA-free, Phthalate-free, vacuum-free feeding, interchangeable nipples for flow levels (slow for newborns – to fast flow for older babies), microwave-safe, dishwasher-safe...

I used Born Free bottles - they met all of the above credentials and worked great! So they are my pick :)
Target always has a great supply of Born Free bottles (I used plastic as opposed to glass) and nipples.

Car Seats
I'm a big fan of Graco, and while researching car seats they seemed to have consistently great reviews from mommies, consumer's report, and the experts.

It can be a bit confusing buying a car seat for your infant, because now you can choose strictly infant car seats, or 3-in-1 car seats.

A 3-in-1 looks like this:

3-in-1's can be used for babies 5 to 100 pounds, which seemed pretty ridiculous to me, and I just felt more comfortable putting my little guy in the typical, infant car seat. In their defense, they are supposed to be just as safe, and you won't need to buy a new car ceat when your little guy reaches the infant car seat weight limit....but I just couldn't imagine my tiny, floppy little man in one of this tall, wide, armchairs.

We used:

There are many versions of the graco snugride, but they all come in a variety of adorable prints, and are moderately-priced.

They aren't the lightest car seat you can buy, but you should really invest in a stroller for your little one. I lugged Aiden around in his car seat too many times – yes, its a great workout, but it really isn't worth the pain. Take a little extra time and get your stroller out of the back of your car if you have a ways to go with them.

Graco has Travel systems – coordinating car seat , stroller, and a car seat base – that many mommies use, too. For less than 200 you can get a car seat , stroller and base. You can pop the car seat right into the stroller when they are infants, and it serves as a regular stroller as they get older.

Strollers

I have the best sister and brother a mommy-to-be could ask for...and I received a Bugaboo for Aiden's stroller. They really are the smoothest ride, easiest to push, and easiest to maneuver across any terrain.

Additional features:
-comes with an infant bassinet with a plush liner, for strolling around with a little one who is the comfiest laying down. We kept the stroller this way for the first couple months and took tons of walks.

-Has an adjustable recline for the regular stroller seat. We kept it tipped back when Aiden still didn't have the hang of sitting, and now use it completely tipped forward, so he can sit up like a big boy.
-The regular stroller seat flips in one miotion, so your little one can either face you, or face away from you.  Aiden wanted to look right at mommy and daddy when he was younger, but chooses to face the world, now. :)

-Comes with diaper bag clips so you can hook your diaper bag right on, as well as an under-seat storage bin and an adjustable sun shade. You can purchase tons of other fun accessories, like cupholders and rain shades.

Bugaboos are crazy-expensive, but you will 100% notice a different if you test one out. We walked everywhere when we lived downtown, and we were so lucky to have our bugaboo.

If you are planning to have two babies fairly close together, the Phil and Ted's Classic stroller with doubles kit is a MUST.

Most double strollers sit side by side, or one in front of the other, and are enormous. These are okay for twins, but not ideal for a baby + toddler combo.

The Phil and Ted functions as a single baby stroller for your firstborn, then transforms into a double stroller when you add another munchkin to the family. It places one baby on top of the other (see photo), which uses stroller space much more efficiently. And, it is lightweight, maneuverable, and looks super chic. :)

For traveling, shopping strolls, and car-to-stroller strolls, Maclarens are the best.

They come in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors, and range in price from $100 to $900. The less expensive versions are super portable, easy to fold, and easy to push, perfect for casual strolling or traveling. Nice and narrow to squeeze between the racks while shopping. You can purchase tons of great accessories for you and baby, and you can make it your own with one of their many liners

My other recommendation for strollers is Graco, as previously mentioned. They produce dependable strollers, with a variety of features, at a price you can afford. Tons of different models/versions, so take your time and shop around before purchasing!

Bouncy Seats and Swings

We lived at my parent's house right after Aiden was born, and our bouncy seat was a godsend – it is super lightweight and portable, basically a portable seat and napping spot for your little one. As long as they are sturdy, comfy (well-cushioned), have a few fun dangling toys to peak your baby's visual interest, and vibrate, you can't really go wrong. Here are a few I like, for every budget

You can't hold your newborn 24 hours a day, and it's not convenient to have them in their crib everytime they doze off, so Aiden spent the remainder of his time swaddled up, lounging in his bouncer.

We didn't have a baby swing, but some parents prefer them. These typically take up more space, are less portable, and are more expensive. But, the swinging motion works wonders on some babies. The swings I researched online had significantly lower reviews than bouncer. Here is one I like, that is also rated well:

-Recognizes your baby's weight to adjust the swing speed as they grow.

Swaddlers and Burp Cloths

I never really knew about swaddling before having Aiden, but it is a genius idea. Newborns tend to “startle” often, and wrapping them up nice and tight in a swaddler prevents this, helping them stay asleep.

We received a lot of expensive swaddlers at baby showers – for example, SwaddleDesigns swaddling blankets – but they ended up being way too big for Aiden, and the material was too stiff and thick.  If you have a winter baby, this might be appealing (Aiden was a spring baby).

My thought is that you dress your little one in season-appropriate onesies or sleep-n-plays prior to swaddling, so the blanket itself just needs to be soft and easy to fold and tuck.

We ended up receiving numerous packs of Carter's receiving blankets, and they were the BEST for swaddling. So inexpensive, soft, and easy to wrap. And by far the cutest. Don't waste your money on expensive swaddling blankets!

As for burp cloths, the same rule applies: don't waste your money on expensive brands! Carters and Gerber make great multi-packs – they are much thinner than expensive brands, but you go through a ton everyday, anyway. I used these the most.

For a step up, I recommend burp clothes made of cotton with a soft, absorbent strip of material sewn down the center. They look pretty and collect that gross spit-up quite nicely. For an affordable version of these, check out my latest burpies :

mommy-made baby burpies

I just ordered 6 new designer fabrics that are absolutely adorable.  I can't
wait to get them and make more burpies!  I will be selling them for $5 a burp cloth.
